Our son Ronin Hersh Lowery was born on December 1, 2009 after a long and not so easy labor but with the love and support of Darryl and an amazing Nurse Midwife Nicole Carlson and Doula Sara Kravanic. If it wasn't for them the 18 hour labor may have ended differently! Little Ronin came into this world with his two hands tightly gripped around his umbilical cord so they actually had to peel the cord from his hands! From there he came and cuddled with mom and dad and we were just overjoyed. The experience of childbirth has forever transformed Debra and she says she may have to change her research to study maternal health. She says it was like climbing a mountain, tripping acid, going through a worm hole, and coming back to a world you barely recognize! But all worth it and amazing. Darryl says he still feels the same but there's a new rugrat in the house. For now it's one day at a time!

Debs: So amazing to read your thoughts & insights re. Ronin's birth and your own growth, a definite right of passage and truly life altering experience. I envy you in that men will never know this amazing transformative process—like the most intense vision-quest possible. As well, knowing your labor was just that, labor!, glad to know you had a great support system around you. BTW, does he have Darryl's eyes or what! G.
